Electronic money known as transportation IC cards is widespread in Japan and can be used as a contactless payment method not only when riding trains but also at convenience stores and restaurants. The two major IC cards are PASMO, issued by private railway companies, and SUICA, issued by JR East, the former Japanese National Railways, and if you have one of these, you can pay at many public transportation facilities and stores in Japan. While regular cards require a deposit, the "WELCOME SUICA" for foreign tourists is an IC card that can be used for 28 days without a deposit. When you come to Japan, we recommend that you first get a WELCOME SUICA and charge it with around 10,000 yen.
